A Talk And Discussion of the
2012 CALIFORNIA BALLOT MEASURES:

Prop. 34, the SAFE California Act, will replace California’s death penalty with a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole as the maximum punishment for murder.  This means convicted killers will remain behind bars forever – with no risk of executing an innocent person.

BRENT TONIC is a member of California Crime Victims’ for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and has spoken about the death penalty many times as a spokesperson for Proposition 34.  His brother was murdered outside of a bar in 1998.  His experience with the trial process made it clear that a prolonged process, such as a death penalty case, would only make it harder for families of murder victims to grieve. He speaks about how his experience solidified his opposition to the death penalty, and what he thinks victims need from our justice system.

*****
California Proposition 36, Changes in the “Three Strikes” Law will revise the three strikes law to impose life sentence only when the new felony conviction is “serious or violent”.  And it will also authorize re-sentencing for offenders currently serving life sentences if their third strike conviction was not serious or violent and if the judge determines that the re-sentence does not pose unreasonable risk to public safety.

Susan Olson will address the merits of Proposition 36, the Three Strikes Reform Act of 2012.  Ms. Olson was a trial attorney with the Ventura Public Defender’s office for 28 years. She
defended many people with three-strikes charges, including a man who was sentenced to prison for 25 years to life for possession of a small quantity of methamphetamine for personal use.
